Physical, emotional, mental, and sexual abuse are rampant around the world. Sadly, many victims are forced to stay silent out of fear of judgment, shame, guilt, and repercussions.

Joanne Cherisma is a mother, author of "I Never Thought I would Be a Statistic," and nurse by profession. A native of Haiti, she relocated to the United States after the devastating earthquake in 2010. Joanne is a survivor in the truest definition of the word.

Once in the United States, she founded “Beyond the Abuse Inc.” born from her very own personal story. She survived and left an abusive relationship where she felt alone and saw no way out. "I am a living witness that there is hope," said our Fanm Potomitan. Her organization's purpose is to bring awareness against toxic relationships, provide hope, empower, and instill confidence in the victims and their families.

Beyond The Abuse Inc. provides a haven for any person who has experienced any abuse. They foster an open-door policy regardless of race, gender, age, and sexual orientation. Joanne believes that there is hope after the storm. One needs to find their purpose of growing and help others.

If you find yourself in an abusive relationship, Joanne and Beyond the Abuse Inc. want you to know that "You’re not alone, speak up and speak out. If you are alive, there is always hope.” Abuse can happen to anyone, it does not discriminate. Do not be afraid to speak up! Do not wait until it is too late!

For standing up against abuse, surviving, and being the voice of Hope after the abuse, Joanne Cherisma is a Fanm Potomitan.
